Power Through Postpartum with HONEY’s Postpartum Recovery Tips

New mothers often find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of emotions and physical changes. Through this article our goal is to highlight that music is an approachable way to manage postpartum stress.

Understanding Music Therapy

Music therapy, at its core, is a structured and therapeutic use of music to address physical, emotional, and social needs. In the postpartum context, it serves as a gentle yet powerful tool to alleviate stress and anxiety. This therapy is not just about listening to music; it encompasses a range of activities like singing, listening, and dancing.  All of these activities are used to express our emotions in an organized or disorganized way - the key here is that the emotions are actively being expressed (not bottled in).

Just Dance

The phrase "just dance" (thanks a queen called Lady Gaga) encapsulates the essence of music therapy. Dancing to a rhythm can be incredibly liberating, providing a physical outlet for emotional turmoil. The act of moving to music activates various parts of the brain, fostering a sense of well-being and relaxation.

Headphone Haven

Reflecting on personal experiences, many of us have been 'that girl' with headphones on, finding solace in our favorite tunes during challenging times. In college, graduate school, or intense training, music can be a personal sanctuary. The same applies to postpartum life. Tailoring a music therapy experience to include personal favorites, like "Late Night Talking" by Harry Styles (my personal favorite), can create a sense of familiarity and comfort during those long, often overwhelming, newborn nights.

Lullabies Are For You TOO

Integrating sweet, calming music into the newborn phase can serve as a soothing lullaby not just for the baby but for the mother as well. Slow, rhythmic music can aid in relaxation and sleep, making those late-night sessions more manageable and serene for the two of you.

So, whether it's through dancing, listening, or simply enjoying a favorite song in the still of the night, music can play a pivotal role in harmonizing postpartum wellness. So, let the music play, and let it guide you through the beautiful, albeit challenging, journey of motherhood.
